Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall | Fort Myers, Florida

The true event-inspired Broadway phenomenon Come From Away is heading to Fort Myers, Florida, this winter. On Wednesday 26th February 2025, Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall will present the heartwarming, award-winning performance that tells the tale of a small Canadian town aiding thousands of stranded airline passengers during the tragic events of 9/11.

When America fell under attack, the country forced 38 planes with over 6,500 passengers to land and wait in Gander, New Foundland, a small city with a big heart. During this period of global confusion, heartbreak, and fear, the Gander townspeople opened their homes, schools, and churches to these thousands of stranded passengers who were waiting for permission to head back home. Over those few days, the people of Gander showed the power of generosity in times of turbulence, and the acclaimed performance Come From Away shares this tale with lively musical numbers, talented actors, and an unforgettable performance all round.

If you adore musical theater and are ready for the next can’t-miss event, purchase your Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall tickets for the Come From Away Wednesday 26th February 2025 performance, starting at just $95. Secure your spot sooner rather than later so that you can get the perfect seat in the theatre to experience the Broadway musical that, as Newsweek put it, takes you "to a place you never want to leave!"

Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall proudly presents some of the top Broadway performances around, and this winter that lineup includes Come From Away. This musical adaptation of the book by the same name follows the real story of Gander, Newfoundland, and its awe-inspiring spirit of generosity in times of tragedy.

Story

During the early hours of September 11, 2001, the FAA shut down America's airspace as an emergency response to the Twin Towers debacle. This shutdown forced multiple planes to land and, fortunately, America's neighbor to the north opened its airports and military bases to American planes that needed to land. Among the many cities that took in stranded passengers was Gander in Newfoundland, a relatively small town of only 10,000 people.

The townsfolk welcomed the 6,579 grounded passengers with open arms and homes. The beautiful storytelling of this Broadway performance displays the various cultural clashes and uneasiness of these two groups learning to live together while ultimately forming lifelong friendships. This Broadway performance delivers an uplifting message of hope, heart, and the power of serving others in troubling times.

History

The initial idea for the show started with Michael Rubinoff, a lawyer and theater producer from Toronto. Rubinoff worked with several writing teams but eventually left it to David Hein and Irene Sankoff to turn this inspiring true story into a moving theatrical performance. Together, these two iconic storytellers wrote a book about the hospitality of the people of Gander and the music and lyrics for the musical they workshopped in Ontario.

After hearing the stories, Hein and Sankoff workshopped a 45-minute exhibition for the Canadian Music Theatre Project in 2012. Come From Away's success later led to a full-on musical production at Sheridan in 2013, finding its way to The National Alliance for Musical Theatre in New York. Eventually, Come From Away would make its way to the United States, performing for crowds in San Diego and Washington D.C. before finally making its Broadway appearance in 2017.

Awards

Following seven musical nominations for the 71st Tony Awards, Come From Away became the longest-running Canadian musical on Broadway. The Broadway spectacle has also won several awards, including the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Musical in 2017 and a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 2017. From memorable songs like "Welcome to the Rock" and "On the Edge" to the well-accomplished cast, which includes Phillip Lowe, Alice Fearn, and David Thaxton, this Tony Award nominee guarantees the theatrical event of a lifetime.
