Made by Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, The Book of Mormon challenges our orthodox view of religion and the way that religious teachings and stories are preached, staging the musical and its takeaways through satire and comedy. The musical talks about the mission of two Latter-Day Saints (LDS) missionaries, Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, spreading their religion to the local population of a village in Uganda and their hilarious attempts to find the right ways to spread their religion.

Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham are two coming of age Mormon missionaries tasked with a mission to a native Ugandan village. Their mission is to convert the villagers to their faith, but they find out upon their arrival that their job is more difficult than they had realized, given the great deal of local issues that the villagers are against such as oppression, an HIV/AIDS epidemic, and poverty among others. The pair then come to accept that they must utilize more unusual ways to succeed in their mission than the traditional method that they know.

It is in the pair’s differing ways where the performance of The Book of Mormon shines – allowing the subject matter of religion to be blasphemed and made fun of with comedy, showtunes, and a bit of crude language, yet still remaining unobjectionable to theatre fans. Since its debut in 2011, the The Book of Mormon has been received positively despite its manner of challenging religious belief. The church itself supported the musical, buying ads and releasing marketing marketing material that stated: “You’ve seen the play, now read the book.” In its West End performances, the repeatedly sold-out shows were a testament to The Book of Mormon’s success. Though most viewers were already eagerly curious given the content and theme of the play, according to The Guardian, it was even to their surprise that “suddenly you realize you’re in for not just humour but a a thought provoking tale that just keeps on getting better.” The musical’s run in Australia just as successful, with the Sydney Morning Herald even proclaiming that the Book of Mormon is a “dynamite production of a show that can lay fair claim to being the funniest Broadway musical of all time.”

It's no shock that because of the musical's creativity, The Book of Mormon’s several productions worldwide have earned it nine Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, three Outer Circle Critics awards, four Olivier Awards, and two Helpmann Awards.

This upbeat, happy, and totally silly musical continues its tour in Florida.
